Ministry’s ‘Talk Block’: When Press Freedom Meets Bureaucratic Creativity
Published · Updated · By Satya Pramesi
An Instagram post by Progressive Media Lit Magdalene—featuring findings from an independent probe into an acid attack on a human rights activist, complete with video evidence—was taken down in Indonesia. The ministry behind the removal cited a complaint claiming the post was provocative disinformation. Magdalene deemed the action illegal and rallied support from NGOs and the Indonesian Press Council. The Committee for the Safety of Journalists argued Magdalene should already enjoy press protections. Following public outcry, the post was restored on April 9, 2026. As of now, the ministry has yet to apologize.

An Instagram post by Progressive Media Lit Magdalene vanished from the platform. The post contained findings from an independent investigation into an acid attack on a human rights activist, with video evidence. The responsible ministry stated it acted on a complaint alleging the post was provocative disinformation. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Magdalene called the removal illegal. The outlet sought support from NGOs and the Indonesian Press Council (Dewan Pers). [6] The Committee for the Safety of Journalists reminded the government that Magdalene should already receive legal protections extended to the press. [7]
Magdalene reported the post was reinstated on April 9, 2026. [8] As of the time of recording, the ministry had not issued an apology. [9]
The foreign propaganda bill could provide more mechanisms for blocking content in Indonesia. [10] The ministry remained silent on the omission.
What has happened since
The investigation Komdigi tried to geoblock turned out to be right. On June 10, 2026, a military court convicted the four BAIS TNI (army strategic intelligence) personnel who threw acid at KontraS activist Andrie Yunus, sentencing them to between 1.5 and 3 years and discharging two from military service for premeditated assault causing serious injury. [9] All four appealed the same day the verdict was read, so the sentences are not yet final; military prosecutors did not appeal. [10]
Separately, on April 14, Indonesia’s Press Council (Dewan Pers) held a formal discussion with its constituent organizations on Komdigi’s blocking of Magdalene’s content and reasserted that determining what counts as journalistic work is the Council’s authority, not the ministry’s. [11] No apology from the ministry has surfaced since.
